Subtensions

Official 2021 Leupold reticle manual page 5 (Boone & Crockett, VX-5HD / VX-3HD, SFP - subtensions hold at maximum magnification). Published on the page: 0.7 MOA heavy lines, 0.2 MOA heavy lines, holds at 2.2 / 4.8 / 6.3 / 7.8 MOA and bar reaches of 2.2 and 3.0 MOA. || Rebuilt 9 Sep 2026 from the PDF's vector coordinates. Three corrections. (i) THE HOLD BARS ARE TWICE AS WIDE AS DRAWN. The record read the sheet's 2.2 MOA and 3.0 MOA bar callouts as TOTAL widths and drew the bars +-1.1 and +-1.5. They are reaches from the vertical: the wedges run out to 2.17 and 3.05 either side, so the bars span 4.34 and 6.10 MOA overall. (ii) The bars are WEDGES, not uniform strips - 0.05 thick where they leave the vertical and 0.45 at the tip. The record drew them 0.7 thick, which is the outer post's weight, not theirs; they are now drawn at 0.25, the mean, because a taper element here would be read as bar furniture by the painter's framing rule and shrink the whole sight picture. (iii) The horizontal and top posts were omitted rather than guessed. They are on the sheet and are now drawn: the fine 0.2 cross ends at 2.56 on the windage and above centre and tapers to the full 0.7 bar at 3.03. Also corrected: the 6.3 tick is 0.68 wide, not 1.2, and the bottom post's taper starts at 7.85 rather than the bar simply beginning at 7.8. NOTE FOR THE APP: adding the windage posts pulls ReticlePainter's barTip down to 2.56, which makes the on-axis 6.29 tick count as furniture and frames the default view at about +-5 MOA vertically. The geometry is right and zoom reaches the rest, but the framing rule may want revisiting for duplex reticles whose holds sit outside the bar tips.

How this one was checked

Verified 9 Sep 2026 against page 5 of Leupold's 2021 reticle manual (BOONE & CROCKETT, VX-5HD / VX-3HD) by reading the PDF's VECTOR strokes with pymupdf. The reticle is drawn as filled outlines, so every number below is a polygon vertex read out of the file rather than a measurement off a render. Scale comes from the sheet's own line-weight callout: the outer bar measures 12.00 pt against a printed 0.7 MOA, giving 17.72 pt/MOA about the crosshair at (463.29, 337.13) in the magnified right-hand detail. That scale then reproduces all four printed subtensions to better than 0.05 MOA - the upper hold bar at 2.20, the lower at 4.82, the small tick at 6.29 and the start of the bottom post's taper at 7.85, against the sheet's 2.2 / 4.8 / 6.3 / 7.8 - and reads the inner heavy line as 0.229 MOA against its printed 0.2. Checked line by line: no centre dot and no gap, the fine 0.2 cross running unbroken through centre; duplex transitions at 2.56 MOA on the windage and above centre, tapering to full 0.7 thickness at 3.03; the bottom arm running much further before its transition, 7.85 tapering to 8.33; two CPC hold bars below centre, each drawn as a pair of wedges starting 0.11 off the vertical and reaching 2.17 (upper) and 3.05 (lower), thickening outward from 0.05 at the axis to 0.45 at the tip; and a plain 0.68 x 0.22 tick on the vertical at 6.29. No windage marks below or beside centre, no numerals, no circles.
